Increased Storage
As a result of spending more time at home cooking their own meals, many Americans feel the need to increase their kitchen’s storage capacity. 94% of all home remodels in 2020 included cabinet work, while nearly half of all homeowners added or upgraded their pantries. Similarly, nearly all homeowners who add or upgrade their kitchen island incorporate storage elements like cabinets and drawers.
Countertop and Backsplash Upgrades
Increasing the size and number of cabinets necessitates new countertops. In fact, countertops top the charts as the most commonly upgraded kitchen feature, followed closely by backsplash upgrades. The majority of homeowners prefer a multi-colored quartz or granite countertop with a contrasting white or wood-tone island countertop. New countertops look incomplete, however, without a complementary backsplash. More than half of all homeowners prefer ceramic or porcelain tile backsplashes that extend from counter to upper cabinets.
Colors
Neutral colors reign supreme in the kitchen. The top three wall colors of 2021 are gray, white, and beige. Similarly, the most popular backsplash color (by far) is white. Along those same lines, 70% of homeowners prefer stainless steel appliances over other finishes. Wood tones are the top choice of flooring material; however, slightly more homeowners prefer wood-look tile than hardwood.
