Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Floors

Throughout the winter, your floors can take a beating. Shoes drag in snow, dirt, mud, salt, and any pets you have track in who knows what else. Spring is the perfect time to do some deep cleaning and really bring some life back into your flooring. Here are some tips from the team at Claghorn Custom Flooring to get you started.

Tile or Vinyl

Generally speaking, tile and vinyl flooring are the easiest to keep clean. As mentioned above, however, some build-up can occur over the winter months. Start by sweeping your floors to remove any of the larger dirt, dust, and particles. For a bonus step, run a Swiffer or something similar over your floors to get the last of the dust. After that, mop your floors with a cleaner of your choice. You can even make your own solutions like apple cider vinegar and water for your vinyl or white vinegar and water for your tile. If you have grout that also needs to be cleaned, a steam mop is a wonderful option.

Carpets

Start by giving your carpets a good vacuum and check for any missed stains. Ideally, you’d spot-treat a stain right when the accident occurred, but life happens, so if you notice anything you may have missed, go ahead and treat it with stain remover now. Thoroughly soak up the cleaner after it has had time to treat the stain. If you noticed any physical damage to your carpets, like tears or loose spots, have them repaired or replaced to prevent them from getting worse.

Hardwood

When it comes to natural hardwood floors, you’ll want to be careful and make sure you use treatments specifically designed for your floors. Your floor may have even come with care instructions that you can consult before cleaning. When mopping your hardwood floors, keep the mop just damp enough to wet the floors. You do not want to soak them as that can lead to damage. If you notice the floors are beyond a good mop, contact a professional about a wood refinish.
