Protecting Your Floors during Summer

It’s hard to believe, but summer is right around the corner.

For most people, that means it’s time to relax, enjoy the warm weather, go on vacation, and the like. But for your floors, it’s a whole different story. Indeed, the summertime, as great as it is, can be very tough on your floors. The sunlight, humidity, elements from outside, and much more can all do quite a number on your flooring – while you’re probably oblivious to it. Fortunately, following a few simple yet effective tips can help ensure that your flooring stays safe during the summer months. Here at Claghorn Custom Flooring, we’ve offered up a few things to keep in mind as summer quickly approaches.

Use doormats outside entrances to your home

As people come in and out of your home during the sunny summer months, they’re inevitably bringing in dirt, sand, grit, small pebbles, and the like with them. All of these, in turn, can do serious damage to your floor in a small amount of time. Therefore, place doormats outside your doors, and ask that all family members, friends, and guests wipe their shoes on them before entering.

Vacuum the floor rather than sweep it

Dragging dirt, sand, and other particles across the floor will damage it over time. Instead, vacuum the floors on a regular basis to ensure that they not only stay clean but also in top condition.

Limit sunlight exposure with curtains and blinds

Too much sunlight can cause discoloration, especially on wood floors. Use blinds and curtains if your floors receive a lot of sunlight to help protect them and keep their color.

Monitor humidity levels closely

Use a hygrometer to closely monitor humidity levels, as too much or too little humidity can do a number on your flooring. Try to aim to keep the humidity levels in your home roughly 35 to 55 percent and use a dehumidifier if necessary to maintain proper humidity levels.

Replace felt tips under tables and chairs

Felt tips under chairs and tables can pick up particles of sand, dirt, grits, etc. brought in from outside your home. Replace them if necessary to prevent them from scratching your flooring.
