Tiling

Porcelain vs. Ceramic Tile

When looking to remodel their homes, whether to choose porcelain or ceramic tile is something that many homeowners debate extensively. Both types of tiling have their own unique advantages, and each typically works better in different situations. Here at Claghorn Custom Flooring, we have plenty of experience working with both types of tile. Here’s a closer look at both, and their respective advantages and disadvantages.

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain is a form of ceramic tile made of the fusion of clays. Porcelain is always a popular tiling option and certainly offers plenty of unique advantages. Specifically, it offers excellent liquid resistance and is highly stain-resistant. It also has a much lower water absorption rate, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor usage. It’s also very durable, fireproof, and requires little maintenance. However, the downsides to porcelain are that its more expensive and more difficult to cut, compared to ceramic tile.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile is made from material that’s semi-crystalline, inorganic, and amorphous in nature. The advantages of ceramic tile are that it’s water-resistant, affordable, comes in a wide array of design options, and is very resistant to allergens like dust and pollen. The drawbacks of ceramic tile are that it’s more difficult to clean and somewhat less durable, compared to porcelain tile.
