How To Protect Your Floors As Cold Weather Approaches

As summer draws to a close and cooler weather begins to emerge, now is the time to think about how to protect your floors from the fall and winter months. Even the most diligent homeowners can’t always eliminate the dirt and slush from cold-weather foot traffic. At Claghorn Custom Flooring, we love living in a climate that experiences four seasons, and we understand how to keep floors looking fresh despite them.

Carpet

During cold months, rain, snow, slush, and dirt embed themselves into the carpet fibers, which causes staining. Foot traffic causes wear-and-tear over time, but rainboots and heavy winter boots intensify it. Therefore, be sure to place entry mats at each door to collect as much excess grime as possible. Of course, you can always ask guests to remove their shoes before entering. Finally, invest in quality carpeting and have them professionally cleaned during cold-weather months.

Hardwoods

Temperature changes are tough on hardwood flooring. Why? Hardwoods expand and contract during temperature swings, and with humidity. In cold weather, it contracts, which means you could see cracks between planks. This is normal and should not be a cause for concern. Protect your floors by maintaining a steady temperature between 60-70 degrees throughout the year. Finally, refinish hardwoods periodically to extend their life span and keep them looking nice.

Tile

Custom tile comes in many different types of material, such as stone, marble, porcelain, slate, and ceramic. Each of these materials is pretty durable in nature. Still, it would be best if you protect your floors by taking care of and maintaining them. One of the best ways to do this is by cleaning the grout and natural pores and crevices. For the floors themselves, use a cleaner made especially for your flooring type. Also, ensure that you don’t let water sit too long and re-grout when necessary.

Luxury Vinyl

Luxury vinyl is virtually indestructible compared to other types of flooring, which makes it a wise investment. The product comes in a wide variety of colors and styles, appealing to many homeowners. These floors should stand tall no matter how many muddy, wet boots or paws track across them. While you can be confident that luxury vinyl flooring withstands most normal wear-and-tear, you still have to clean them. Actually, we recommend you clean them frequently since dirt, debris, and moisture have nowhere to go.
